Positive Sustainability, A Note From Our Founder
By Susie Willis
Being sustainable is a table stake for Romilly Wilde. It has always been something that has been close to the heart of building a brand for me. My previous organic baby food brand ‘Plum’ was established in 2004 was both Soil Association Certified, Fair Trade and Cosmos. This was before sustainability credentials were a thing, but a strong precursor to protecting our environment against pesticides, petrochemicals and social governance to go some way to protect workers from being exploited.
In modern terms, it is known as ESG (Environment, Social Governance) and you can either get certified by BCorp or Positive Luxury. We chose the latter as they score you on individual attainments, across all aspects of sustainability, codes of conduct and true impact. It is not based on a combined score. We feel that this is more transparent and is, as a result, harder to attain.

Any brand can design their own proprietary symbols whether for animal welfare, eco-friendly packaging or clean science. Unless you are getting third party validation and certification, these are simply misleading.
We are now in an era of transparency, having partnerships with supply chains and creating ESG goals that are ongoing. We were originally certified by Positive Luxury back in 2020 and are currently undertaking an exhaustive audit to gain extended certification. For a small business this is resource heavy and takes time, but we absolutely believe in the ‘certification’ and getting a regulated authority ‘marking your homework’ and validating your claims.
At the heart of our sustainability is the journey towards building more resilient supply chains for the future through sustainable procurement. Many suppliers will tell you that they are supplying you with sustainable products, but without credible certification there is often no way to know that this really is the case.
We are currently moving all of our products to packaging made from materials that are both recycled, and are recyclable. We also reduce or eliminate excess over-engineered design and finishing on packaging, that may be beautiful, but not in the least bit practical or sustainable. We put all our value inside not outside the pack. We did exhaustive research on refillable options, and the honest truth is that consumers simply don’t buy the refills. The concept is great, but reality is very different. The behaviour dictates the truth.
We are excited to soon be launching, one by one, our move towards a family of exceptional sustainable packaging. This new kind to planet look will be not only practical – with perfect product dosing – but will look and feel as contemporary and elegant as you would always expect from Romilly Wilde.
