Earth Day: A Note From Our Founder

Earth day has ignited and inspired social change since the first one in 1970. At Romilly Wilde, our commitment is to continue to improve our own footprint and to be transparent about our goals. You can see our scores via our Butterfly Mark (Positive Luxury Certification) and Provenance.

The very first World Earth Day was in 1970, just about the time I was born.  To think that back then, over 50 years ago, activists were already starting to see the cracks, and the protests already started taking place after lack of certainty over use of nuclear energy, renewable resource being compromised and the early signs of waste and pollution from industry.

Since then, Earth Day has ignited and inspired social changeNot only does it engage and educate children with special curriculum packs and toolkits to help explain to children what pollution does to damage the environment, but it finds ambassadors world-wide to continue the education and communicationOperationally, trees are planted, and local clean-up teams all gather to clear beaches, oceans, water systems and land of plastics and other hazardous ‘ waste’.

The word ‘waste’ captures the whole end-to-end irresponsibility that industry has created, and consumerism has supported.  Ending plastic manufacture is critical, ending fast-fashion and fast-beauty, some of the biggest polluters of our age.

We have created a plastic planet for the next generation, but we can help to remove the micro-plastics, stop purchasing unsustainable packaging and for all those passionate activists out there, help us to engineer and design better and more efficient ways to securely and responsibly meet a consumer vs commercial dilemma.

Technology and Biotechnology is the way forward.  This innovation will protect and advance our insatiable appetite for new, advanced products.

Our commitment is to continue to improve our own footprint and to be transparent about our goals.  You can see our scores via our Butterfly Mark (Positive Luxury Certification) and Provenance. We also support Ecologi, and in the past year alone have supported a global reforestation mix planting 1080 trees and avoided 103 tCO2e of emissions by doing the following for those who are interested.  We are!

  • Protection of the Mataven Forest in Eastern Columbia.
  • Solar PV Electricity Generators in Indonesia.
  • Peatland restoration and conservation in Indonesia.
  • Turning Local organic waste into electricity in India.
  • Wind power project in Mexico
  • Distributing cleaner cookstoves in Kenya.
  • Generating wind power in US.
  • Avoiding methane emission from organic waste into electricity in India.
  • Generating renewable solar electricity in Egypt.
  • Protecting rainforest in a wildlife sanctuary in Cambodia.
  • Repairing water boreholes in Eritrea.
  • Conserving the Amazon in Brazil.

This is a lens into the work we do outside of scienceOur sustainability work is all part of why we work within the field of Biotechnology and clean technologies.

I hope you have found this interesting.
